The name banana connector is very popular when it comes to wiring. The popularity of the banana connector is a result of its easy use and secure connection of wires.

If you are new or unfamiliar with electric wiring, it will not be surprising if you don’t know about banana connectors. Then this article is just for you. The Banana Connector

So what is a banana connector? A banana connector mainly consists of two parts. The banana plug (male), and the banana socket/jack (female). These two make up the banana connector.

The banana connector is used for single wire connections.

There are many different styles and sizes of banana connectors. The two most commonly used banana connectors are the 4mm and the 2 mm banana connectors. Each banana connector mates with its distinctive banana sockets.

Regardless of the size and design of the banana connector you possess, they all work in the same principle.

How to use the Banana Connector

So how to use a banana connector? It is quite simple. Follow these steps below, and you will be able to use your banana connectors easily.

Prepare the wire:  First, we need to prepare the wire for connecting with the banana connectors. All you need to do here is measure the wire’s length and distinguish the positive and the negative wire. Usually, the two wires come attached. You can easily separate them by just pulling them far from each other. We recommend separating both ends of the wire to avoid electrical short circuits.

Strip the wire jacket to expose the wire core:  We need to expose the wire core(conduction material, usually copper). We need to strip the wire jacket from the wire to do that. You can simply use a wire stripper for the job.

Twist the wire strands: After exposing the wire jacket, you will see many wire strands inside. Usually, you will find copper strands, but some wire comes with silver wire strands. Regardless of the strand material, we need to twist them. Why? Because twisting the strands together will make it easier to feed them inside the banana plug.

Solder the end of the wires: It is okay to skip this step if you want. But if you have the tools and time for soldering the end of the cables, we recommend you do it. Soldering the exposed wire strands will prevent them from wearing out and help establish a long-lasting electrical connection.

Unscrew the banana plugs: Now that the wire is prepared, it is time to prepare the banana connector. Regardless of your banana connector model, the banana plug will have two main components. One is the banana plug(the gold-plated metal part), and the other is the screw(the part that twists and comes off). We need to unscrew the banana plug to feed the wire inside.

Feed the wire inside the hole of the banana plug:

After unscrewing the banana plug:

  1. Feed the wire inside the hole of the banana plug.
  2. Push it as deep as it can go.
  3. Make sure no wire strand is hanging out of the banana plug.

Screw back the Banana plug: Now screw back the banana plug. Make sure it is as tight as it can get. The tighter the screw, the stronger the grip of the wire will be.

Repeat for the other wire: Now repeat the same process for the other wire. As banana connectors are used for establishing single wire connections, we recommend you work on one wire at a time.

Push the banana plug into their respective banana jack: Now place the banana plugs in their respective banana jacks. Place the red banana plug in the red banana jack and place the black banana jack in the black banana plug.
