Who does not need headphones these days? To enjoy music at its fullest, good headphones are a necessity. A headphone is not only for home use, but it should also be portable so that it can be used anywhere. And a Bluetooth feature is compulsory for better portability. Wireless headphones are more convenient than wired ones. A headphone must perform well enough to satisfy a music lover. On top of that, better-built premium headphones make the experience even greater. The budget is a big factor here. We cannot expect a very good performance from cheap headphones. If we crank up our budget, we can get preferable headphones.
There are a lot of headphone brands in the market. Sony is a very renowned brand and they surely are one of the best headphone manufacturers. Sony definitely stands out in the headphone industry. They released a lot of headphones. Not all of the headphones were successful like the WH-1000XM3, some were also overlooked because they were underrated or did not carry amazing value. It is very difficult to stand out in the headphone market. Sony MDR-ZX770BN was released back in 2015. It was quite expensive when it was released. Wireless headphones were not as popular as now back then. But now it can be found at a reasonable price and carries amazing value. And it also offers ANC (Active Noise Cancellation).

The unboxing experience is like all other Sony headphones, quite simple. The box includes the headphone itself and other accessories like a 3.5mm cable, micro USB cable for charging and a user manual. A soft fabric carrying pouch is also included. The carrying pouch is a nice touch but as it is made out of cloth, it can’t be used for travel purposes.
Design and Build Quality
The design of a headphone is as important as its sound performance. The Sony MDR-ZX770BN headphones have a distinct look. The build quality is one of the main attractions of these headphones. They are very well built. The headphone feels very solid and chunky. The earcups are made out of sturdy plastic. The outer portion of the earcups are made out of sparkly like plastic material with a silver Sony logo embedded on each side which adds a nice touch to the aesthetics. The earcups can rotate up to 90 degrees so that they can lie on flat surfaces which makes these headphones portable.
The headphone is made out of soft material, and it does not create any sort of pressure on the head and is rather comfortable. It is so light that you’ll stop noticing it after wearing it for a while. The ear cushions are very soft and made out of artificial leather. This headphone does a great job at creating a very decent and comfortable seal around the ears. And these headphones can be used for an extended period without any issue.
This headphone is packed with features. The navigation buttons (play, pause, volume control, skipping tracks, receive/ decline calls) along with a sliding button and the volume rocker can be located on the right earcup. The power button and ANC button can be located on the bottom left earcup, where the micro USB port can be also found.
The ANC function works pretty well. It does a quite good job at handling noise. Sony uses AI to detect ambient noise and improve its noise handling abilities. The built-in microphone helps the process. But it won’t block noises from close proximity like someone talking from a very close distance or keyboard noise. Unlike other ANC headphones, the noise cancellation of this headphone does not sound hissy and does not change the quality of music.
The call quality was okay. The microphones are clear but sounds a bit distant as the source is a bit far away.
This headphone also features encoding audio with aptX codec. The aptX codec noticeably improves the audio and latency of the connectivity. To avail aptX encoding, a compatible Android device is required.
As it is a Bluetooth device, it can be connected with any Bluetooth compatible device. The process is easy and smooth. Holding down the power button for 7 seconds enables the headphones pairing mode. The headphone also features NFC which can be used to pair headphones more easily. So far, connectivity is not an issue.
As Sony claims, this headphone has a battery life of 13 hours ANC enabled which is pretty good and enough to cover for 2 days. It can be extended to 19 hours with ANC disabled. Maybe the battery life is not as good as some of the flagships out there but still, it is good enough. The headphone’s battery takes 2.5 hours to fully charge which is quite fast.
How Does it Sound?
The sound performance is consistent. Sony MDR-ZX770BN delivers crisp and clean sound. It is full of power which you can feel instantly after tuning to your favorite music. The sound profile is flat or balanced which makes it versatile for different genres. The bass is not overpowering. The bass lacks details. The mid-end is very crisp clean and soothing. The vocals sound very clean and detailed. The high end is also very pleasant. It is not harsh like a lot of headphones out there.
And on another note, the headphone performs better when it is connected with a good source via the 3.5mm port. The soundstage is wide. And by wide, I mean wide enough to separate different instruments playing around. The instrument’s direction can be pinpointed without an issue. So overall, the sound performance is good. It might not be the headphone for audiophiles but it won’t disappoint an everyday music listener.
